2026 WCQ: Rohr demands FIFA deduct three points from South Africa
Benin Republic head coach Gernot Rohr has called on FIFA to deduct three points from South Africa after the Bafana Bafana allegedly fielded an ineligible player in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Lesotho.
Teboho Mokoena featured in South Africa’s 2-0 win despite being due to serve a suspension. The 28-year-old had received yellow cards in their opening matches against Benin and Zimbabwe.
Speaking to Reuters, Rohr said he was surprised that FIFA had not acted on the matter ahead of this week’s qualifiers.
“It is not normal that we don’t know the situation about the points on the log table before our games this week,” the Franco-German tactician said.
“It is very, very strange. Normally, SA should lose three points, and they [the points] should go to Lesotho. But nobody knows why they [FIFA] did not take this decision.”
South Africa top Group C with 13 points, five ahead of Rwanda and Benin, and six clear of Nigeria, whom they face in Bloemfontein next Tuesday. Lesotho have six points, while Zimbabwe sit bottom with four.
